In November 1999, we traveled to India for the first time choosing Rajasthan as the main area for our initial exploration. We were quite fortunate to have hooked up with Vinod (thanks Liza!) to be our guide and driver.

Traveling by car over 3000 kilometers in 16 days, we covered a lot of territory including Udaipur, Kumbhal Garh, Ranakpur, Jodhpur, Pokaran, Jaisalmer, Khenchan (migrating birds), Kolayat (Holy lake), Bikaner, Deshnokh (rat temple), Kitasar (village), Jaipur, Kevladeo Park, Fatehpur Sikary, and Agra (Taj Mahal).

A story that we remember fondly is how, after our first 3 days, Vinod turned to us and said, "I am the kangaroo and you are in my pouch - you have nothing to worry about." And indeed it was so true as we let Vinod's vast knowledge lead us on a magical and unforgettable tour.

And do not think for a moment that you only see what's in the guide book when traveling with Vinod. Experiences like spending several nights in a little village and traveling around on a camel cart, going to a wedding in Jaipur or seeing a secret place where thousands of birds converge are just a few of the special touches that made the trip so special.

We can't wait to go back.

Returned to Jaipur in December 2004 (with 4 yr old Miles) for another short but fabulous visit. Went to Ranthambhore (didn't see a tiger but it was fun anyway - remember to ask Vinod to take you to the giant stone elephant that's not even in the guide books but is only a small detour). Went to the Shekavati area and stayed at the Samode Palace. And did a lot of shopping in Jaipur.
